oye!

No your eyes are not deceiving you, that is a real live kitchen in the real live house that we actually were in competing offers for…. believe… or not {no but seriously I’m not kidding}!

After a whole lota primer, paint and elbow grease we managed to transform our lemon lime dream kitchen to something a little more manageable…. it looks like this

 She aint fancy, but it is pretty amazing what a little paint and hardware can do isn’t it!

Though our chocolate brown {for now} kitchen it a heck of a lot better than the yellow and lime mess we were working with, we pretty much stripped this space of like all it’s personality.  Enter TURTLE!

I was wandering my fav local thrift store {Vinnie’s} when I stumbled upon this open shelled beauty.  While other’s may have overlooked this $1 dude, I saw nothing but opportunity for him!

I brought him home, doused him in a coat of white spray paint and voila!

Like an all new man… I mean turtle!

Now you are probably wondering, what the heck are you going to do with this turtle who is missing half his shell.  Well to you strange person asking me rhetorical questions {wait that’s me} I am going to add a little personality to my kitchen that’s what.

Thrifting Finds

It is a beautiful Saturday and the sun in shinning, and the dog had me up at 6am…. I managed to squeeze an extra hour out of him but by 7 am he wanted me up.  I wasn’t happy, I am not going to lie but now just before noon I want to thank him.  I feel like I have already had a full day and it isn’t even lunch time!

I’m home alone today so I was able to get some much overdo blog stalking reading in as I sat in bed enjoying the quiet of my house.  It’s a nail trim day for the big beast but it was much too hot to do our usual 7km round trim walk to the doggie beauty salon so we did a quick 2km around the neighbourhood to get him good and tired before heading there in the car.

The doggie salon is just across the road from our old apartment building which just happens to be next door to one of our favourite parks.  There is a great little spot just down into the trails where we used to take the little mutts to enjoy a cooling of swim {before we moved to our house which is AC equipped} so since Mr. Shaq was such a good boy during his pawdicure, I decided he deserved to a cooling swim on this hot day.

For those of you that don’t know Shaq is our 80 some odd pound Weimaraner.  This is taken straight from the ever-so-reliable Wikipedia, “ Weimaraners are great water dogs as evidenced by their webbed toes” and as I someone who has owned a Weim before, I know its true, so I figured Shack would be pretty pumped about his swim….

Simply Style Blog - Thrifting Finds{Shaq the Weimaraner}

Not so.  That’s right, my big tough, somewhat intimidating beast of a dog was terrified of the babbling stream and what I finally figured out to be the large rocks that are in the water.  I don’t even think he got a chance to enjoy the cool down because he was so anxiety ridden by the fact that the water was moving and “what the heck, there ANOTHER rock!”

Alright, enough about my big grey beast, but this is leading somewhere because before I could get through to confirm we could get the dude in for his pawdicure I decided that a little thrifting was in order.  I had spied these lamps at Vinnies earlier in the week that I had {mistakenly} left behind so I decided a trip there and to Value Village couldn’t hurt on a Saturday morning.

I was in Value Village’s parking lot at 8:59am {they open at 9} and not wanting to look like the crazy thrift shopper {i am}, I decided I would head across the street and pick myself up a Starbucks.  Now I am entirely aware of the irony of enjoying a $5.45 black tea latte before heading in to Value Village but hey!

Now as I have mentioned before I have been finding out Value Village to be a little out of control lately.  The sweet deals we once had appear to be long gone so I rarely walk out with anything but today was a totally different story.  Along with a variety of different small decor items and projects I found this.

Simply Style Blog - Thrifting Finds{hexagon table}

Oh yay, a hexagon table you say.  What’s so exciting about that?  After all I already did over two of these bad boys for our living room so what could I possibly want with another.  Well this smaller version with a little more height on it caught my eye.  I stopped to check it out and as much as I loved it had no idea where it would go, buuuuuuuut then I saw the price tag …  $4.99, that’s right FOUR DOLLARS AND NINETY NINE CENTS.  For those of you that haven’t yet fallen asleep or skimmed past the blabber above, you will know that that is LESS than I just paid for my Starbucks latte, so after coming to that conclusion I determined it simply could not be left behind.

After spending my $25 or so at Value Village I headed over to Vinnie’s to check on my lamps.  Luckily there were three of them left {there were like 6 or 8 on Monday} and I decided at $5 a piece they were coming home.  Our Vinnie’s is great because if you get them hope and they don’t work they will take them back {because $5 bucks is $5 bucks and you can buy yourself a lamp or a hexagon table or a Starbucks latte with that}.

I spent my $22.50 at Vinnies, loaded my additional treasures into the car and headed to Home Depot to stock up on spray paint because despite having about 15 cazillion projects currently on the go, there is nothing better than a quick and easy DIY on the cheap!

Alright enough chatter you wanna see the loot don’t you?  Well, here it is!

Simply Style Blog - Thrifting Finds{the loot}

There was one piece that I didn’t want to pass up but with a price tag of $120, it really isn’t a spontaneous buy.

Simply Style Blog - Thrifting Finds{sa-sa-sa-sa-saweet unit  – yup… that just happened}

Those doors on top open up and there are drawers and shelves and all kinds of crazy amazing things.  This would have a great office addition for storing craft supplied or be super fun in a bedroom was was lacking in storage.  I think I will be re-visting him to see if the price goes down.  Last weekend Vinnie’s had a 50% off furniture sale, maybe one of those will come up again. I’ve liked them on Facebook so if it does I will know right away!

So what do you think of my finds?  This was by far more most successful thrifting adventure yet!  Now I am off to spray paint but I leave you with more pictures of my finds.

Office Makeover Phase II – Lamp Revamp

If you have been following this blog you know I am no stranger to an inexpensive lamp update.  You would also know that me and spray paint we go waaaaaay back. So, that being said when it came to finding a lamp what did I do?  An inexpensive spray paint lamp update {duh}!  So off to my fav old unwanted lamp dumping ground, Vinnies, where I dug up this bad boy

Image{ignore the painters tape and horrendous picture, I got excited and forgot to take a proper before}

For a total of $4 I had got myself a curvaceous lamp to call my own.  Now they don’t call it an inexpensive lamp revamp for nothing {if you are wondering who “they” is I really have no explanation, apparently I am a plural entity now}. One can of Navy blue spray paint and my $4 lamp with a brand new $10 lamp shade and…..VOILA!

Image{new lamp}

When it comes to spray paint I have a serious “you get what you pay for” belief.  I tried to go cheap with this project {so yes my 1 can of spray paint comment was a lie… oops!} but it dripped and ran and just made my life plain old miserable.  Let’s-be-honest, when it comes to a spray paint project EASY PEASY is what you are looking for so do yourself a favour and start with the good stuff first! My personal choice for this project was Rustoleum from Home Depot.

And there you have it, a brand new {to me} office lamp for under $20!  Gotta love a cheap and easy makeover!
