Office Makeover Phase I – the plan

I have been working on our downstairs office in stages.  I knew when we moved in that the 5th bedroom that is on our lower level would not be a bedroom and that we would rather have a designated office/craft/project space.  I am not big on traditional desks.  We have a laptop and don’t need that drawer {I always smash my knee into} that is meant to hold a keyboard and I often find desks small and limiting.  I had a vision of two large tables forming an L that would allow both Patrick and I to be working in the space at the same time if need be, but that would also allow for plenty of room for studying, working, crafts and other projects.

One weekend when we were on an Ikea visit {after being run over and trampled on by the $1 breakfast crowd} we were in the dinning area and I saw this:

She’s not pretty, she’s pretty basic, you may even say she’s ugly but she was EXACTLY what I was picturing and for the price of $59 she was sold.  No we didn’t buy her right away, Patrick wasn’t exactly getting my vision so we waited until we moved into the house {and until after the ikea breakfast crowd runs the morning stampede} before heading back to ikea because we are actually insane to pick them up.

I knew I wanted two to form an “L” shape and at the time this particular table came in three sizes. We contemplated getting the largest and the medium sized but in the end opted to go for two of the largest size.

We inherited {and are ever so thankful we did} these ikea Billy Bookcase shelving units from my parents when they moved.  With a collection of the different Billy Bookcase units and doors we were able to create a unit in both the office and the family room.

So we had our workspace and our storage, but alas workspace and storage alone does not an office make.  And … instead of an office, what we had instead was a giant storage room while we puttered away at other house projects and I tried to decide on a colour palette.

You may not know this but, I have an unhealthy love for the colour navy, which I not only incorporated into our wedding but also into our family room in a BIG way {family room reveal to come}.

I was kind of in love with the navy and coral colour combo we were seeing everywhere from home decor to fashion but Patrick wasn’t in love with having a “pink” {he just wouldn’t accept it as coral} office, and since this was intended to be a shared space, I sacrificed my love of the coral and navy colour combination and jumped on board with the slightly more masculine option of navy and orange.

What do you think of this colour palette choice?  It is definitely a bold option but I thought it would be fun for a room we are not in as much.  I will be sharing bits and pieces of our office makeover all week!!!
